Plants climb by means of tendrils[182].
Any pruning should be carried out in winter when the plants are dormant otherwise they bleed profusely[182, 200].
This species is closely related to V. flexuosa and is included as a sub-species of that species by some botanists[11].
Plants in this genus are notably susceptible to honey fungus[200].
