Viburnum cordifolium Deciduous tree (1 Page of 5) The Viburnum cordifolium plant species is found in E. Asia - W. China to the E. Himalayas. It is a member of the Caprifoliaceae family. Some home gardeners know the variety as V. nervosum. D.Don. Cultivation | Propagation | General Uses Medicinal | Edible Uses Latin Name: Viburnum cordifolium Family: Caprifoliaceae Author: Wallich. Known Hazards: None known Mature Height: 6 Mature Width: Habitat: Forests, 2700 - 3300 metres, especially in the wetter parts of Nepal, Uttar Pradesh and westwards to S.W. China and Burma[51].
Cultivation Notes: An easily grown plant, it succeeds in most soils but is ill-adapted for poor soils and for dry situations[1]. It prefers a deep rich loamy soil in sun or semi-shade[11, 200]. Best if given shade from the early morning sun in spring[200].
According to [200], this species is only hardy to zone 9 (tolerating light frosts only), this is rather surprising when it can grow at elevations of up to 3300 metres in the Himalayas[K].
This species is closely related to V. lantanoides[11] and to V. sympodiale[200].
Plants are self-incompatible and need to grow close to a genetically distinct plant in the same species in order to produce fruit and fertile seed[11, 200].
