The Aronia arbutifolia plant species is found in Eastern N. America - Massachusets to Minnesota and south to Texas and Florida. It is a member of the Rosaceae family. Common gardeners may know the plant as Red chokeberry. Some home gardeners know the variety as Pyrus arbutifolia.

Habitat:  Low woods, thickets, swamps, damp pine barrens etc[43].



Cultivation Notes:  Prefers a moist peaty soil in full sun or partial shade[134]. Succeeds in most soils[1] but dislikes shallow chalk[200]. Tolerates atmospheric pollution[227]. Plants are hardy to about -25°c[184]. This genus is closely related to Sorbus species[200]. A suckering plant, it forms thickets in the wild[182]. Some named forms have been developed for thier ornamental value[182]. Plants in this genus are notably resistant to honey fungus[200].
