The Smilax aspera plant species is found in S. Europe to Asia. It is a member of the Smilacaceae family. Common gardeners may know the plant as Sarsaparilla. Some home gardeners know the variety as S. mauritanica. S. nigra.

Habitat:  Bushy places, river banks and ravines[45, 158], usually close to the sea[7].



Cultivation Notes:  Succeeds in most soils in sun or semi-shade[200]. A very ornamental plant[1], it is only hardy in the mildest areas of Britain[11, 166], tolerating temperatures down to about -10°c[184]. The flowers have a heavy sweet perfume[245]. Dioecious. Male and female plants must be grown if seed is required.
