Habitat:  Dry scrub, steppe and rocky limestone slopes to 2600 metres[187].



Cultivation Notes:  Requires a very well-drained fertile sandy soil in a sunny position[200]. Soils rich in nitrogen encourage excessive leaf growth at the expense of flowering[11]. Hardy to about -25°c[187]. Another report says that the plant only tolerates temperatures down to about -10°c[200]. Plants can be killed by excessive winter wet. A low-growing plant forming mats[200]. Members of this genus are rarely if ever troubled by browsing deer[233].
