The Aralia racemosa plant species is found in Eastern N. America - Quebec to Georgia, west to Kansas and Minnesota. It is a member of the Araliaceae family. Common gardeners may know the plant as American spikenard.

Habitat:  Rich woodlands and thickets[21, 43].



Cultivation Notes:  An easily grown plant, succeeding in sun or part shade in any fertile soil[233]. Prefers a good deep loam and a semi-shady position[1, 111, 134]. Requires a sheltered position[1]. Plants are hardier when grown in poorer soils[200]. The young growth in spring, even on mature plants, is frost-tender and so it is best to grow the plants in a position sheltered from the early morning sun[K]. Grows well by water[111].
