Cultivation Notes: Prefers a sandy loam and a very sunny position[1]. Succeeds in any good garden soil that is not excessively limey[11, 167]. Many members of this genus become chlorotic on limey soils[200]. Can succeed in a hot dry position in a mixed border[166].
Plants are fairly hardy in the mildest areas of Britain, though they can be cut back to the ground in severe winters[1, 11].

This species has a symbiotic relationship with certain soil bacteria, these bacteria form nodules on the roots and fix atmospheric nitrogen. Some of this nitrogen is utilized by the growing plant but some can also be used by other plants growing nearby[200].
