The Abutilon theophrasti plant species is found in Asia - tropical. Naturalised in S.E. Europe and the Mediterranean[50]. It is a member of the Malvaceae family. Common gardeners may know the plant as China jute. Some home gardeners know the variety as A. avicennae. Gaertn.

Habitat:  Cultivated ground and waste places in the Mediterranean[50].



Edible Uses:  Seeds - raw or cooked. They can be eaten raw when they are under-ripe[179]. The ripe seed is dried and ground into a powder then used in soups, bread etc[177, 178]. It is washed first to remove any bitterness[179]. The seed contains about 17.4% protein, 16% fat, 33.8% carbohydrate, 4.4% ash[179]. Unripe fruit - raw[177]. This is really more of a seedpod[K].
