The Ilex aquifolium plant species is found in Britain. It is a member of the Aquifoliaceae family. Common gardeners may know the plant as Holly. Some home gardeners know the variety as I. balearica.

Known Hazards:  The plant is poisonous[10], but only in very large doses[65, 76].

Habitat:  Found in most well-drained soils in scrub, hedges and woodland where it is often the dominant under-storey shrub[7].



Edible Uses:  The leaves have been used as a tea substitute[4]. The roasted fruit has been used as a coffee substitute[7]. Some caution is advised here, since the fruit can be purgative and emetic[K].
