The Garrya elliptica plant species is found in Southwestern N. America - California to Oregon. It is a member of the Garryaceae family. Common gardeners may know the plant as Coast silk tassel.

Habitat:  Chaparral and forest on dry slopes and ridges below 600 metres[71, 184].



Medicinal Information:  The leaves are intensely bitter and are used as an antiperiodic and febrifuge. They can be used as a quinine substitute[46, 61, 95]. An infusion has been used to induce menstruation, probably acting as an abortifacient[257].
