Habitat:  Woods in hilly country and foothills all over Japan[58].

Cultivation Notes: We have very little information on this species and do not know if it will be hardy in Britain, though judging by its native range it should succeed outdoors in most parts of this country. The following notes are based on the general needs of the genus. Best grown in partial shade in a moist peaty or woodland soil[1, 175]. Plants spread well by means of creeping rhizomes when they are grown in a leafy soil[187].
