The Cnicus benedictus plant species is found in S. Europe to W. Asia. An infrequent casual in Britain[17]. It is a member of the Compositae family. Common gardeners may know the plant as Blessed thistle. Some home gardeners know the variety as Carbenia benedicta.

Cultivation Notes:  Easily grown in ordinary garden soil[1]. Prefers a dry soil and a sunny position[7]. A very ornamental plant, it is often cultivated in Europe as a medicinal herb and for its oil yielding seed[9, 61].
