Known Hazards: None known Mature Height: 7 Mature Width: Habitat: Forests, 2100 - 3300 metres[198].
Cultivation Notes: We have very little information on this species and do not know if it will be hardy in Britain, though judging by its native range it should succeed outdoors at least in the milder areas of the country. It is very closely related to A. trichogyna and to A. venosa, these three species are possibly just 3 varieties of one species[198]. It is also closely related to A. callosa[198]. The following notes are based on the general needs of the genus.
Prefers a sound loamy neutral soil[1, 200]. Succeeds in semi-shade but full sun is best for fruit production[200]. Prefers a sheltered position[200].
Young spring growth is susceptible to frost damage[160].
Fruits are formed on second year wood and also on fruit spurs on older wood[126], any pruning is best carried out in the winter[219].
This is a climbing plant, supporting itself by twining around branches etc[200].
Plants in this genus are notably resistant to honey fungus[200].
Dioecious. Male and female plants must be grown if seed is required.
