Brassica campestris

The Brassica campestris plant species is found in Europe - Mediterranean. Naturalized in Britain[17]. It is a member of the Cruciferae family. Some home gardeners know the variety as B. campestris autumnalis. B. rapa campestris. (L.)Clapham.

Known Hazards:  The oil contained in the seed of some varieties of this species can be rich in erucic acid which is toxic. However, modern cultivars have been selected which are almost free of erucic acid.

Habitat:  River banks, arable and waste land[17].



Cultivation Notes:  Succeeds in full sun in a well-drained fertile preferably alkaline soil[16, 200]. Succeeds in any reasonable soil but prefers one on the heavy side[16]. Tolerates a pH in the range 4.8 to 8.3. This species is widely cultivated for the oil contained in its seed[1]. Very closely related to and sometimes included in B. rapa[200].
