Habitat:  Not known in the wild.

Cultivation Notes: Prefers a warm moist loamy soil and light shade but it is by no means fastidious, succeeding in thin, dry and shallow soils[11, 200]. Grows well in heavy clay soils. Grows well on chalky soils[11]. Plants are hardy to about -15°c[184]. A very ornamental plant[1], there are several named varieties[182]. The cultivar 'Mystery Fire' bears very large crops of fruit, even on small plants[K]. A good bee plant[108], the flowers are very fragrant. Plants can be pruned back quite severely, they resprout well from the base[200].
